If you’re planning a trip to Europe, one of the most exciting cities in the world to visit is Florence, Italy. Surrounded by the lush landscapes of Tuscany, Florence has been the center of art and culture for centuries. People visit to see its famous landmarks, scenery, architecture and art. Florence is a modern city but the architecture of past centuries still exists. Churches, squares and Renaissance art can be found everywhere. Also abundant are outdoor shopping areas, museums and restaurants. The top attractions for tourists in Florence are: The Uffizi Gallery - the museum holds the world's most important collection of Renaissance art. Next to the Uffizi Gallery is Loggia dei Lanzi, in the Piazza della Signoria, an open-air museum with dozens of famous sculptures. The large square adjacent to it has many outdoor cafes where you can enjoy Italian cuisine and spend leisurely hours watching the people who gather to see the sights, dodge or shop with the square’s vendors, and listening to the outdoor musicians. The Duomo - The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (known as the Duomo) is the most popular attraction and is in the heart of the city. It is colossal with spectacular views from all sides. You will want to spend a long time there, walking around the square, and sampling the restaurants or ice cream stands. The red-tiled dome was designed by Brunelleschi, a founding father of Italian architecture, and is a must-see. There are tours into the dome daily (400 steps to the top!). Also be sure to see the famous bronze Baptistry doors, consisting of 28 panels depicting the life of John the Baptist. The Ponte Vecchio - the famous medieval stone bridge over the Arno River is a scenic treat and a photographer’s dream. In the past, the bridge was occupied by butchers, tanners, and farmers selling their goods. Nowadays you will find art dealers, jewelers and souvenir shops. The famous David sculpture by Michelangelo is in the Accademia Gallery. Not much else needs to be said about that! Enjoy your trip!
