Shang-Chi Edit Hilariously Adds Simu Liu Stock Photo To Civil War Scene

The internet recently discovered that Shang-Chi star Simu Liu used to be a stock photo model, and this edit of him into Civil War is truly hilarious.

A fan edit adds a stock photo of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, into a Captain America: Civil War scene to hilarious effect. The Canadian actor made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut over the weekend as the titular Master of Kung Fu in the film from director Destin Daniel Cretton. In the process, Liu became the first Asian superhero to headline their own Marvel franchise.

Shang-Chi provides many reasons for fans to be excited about Marvel’s latest, not least of which is Liu’s rising stardom. He had limited film credits when he was cast, best known instead for his main role in the Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, and he has been open about his excitement in joining the world of big-budget blockbusters. Liu has become a popular, playful presence on social media, cultivating a balance of fan interactions and awed reactions to his own newfound fame, and he has proven willing to poke fun at himself from time to time. One recent example is when fans rediscovered Liu’s time as a stock photo model, and he responded to the subsequent meme-making by tweeting one of the images to mock Shang-Chi’s detractors.

The meme-making has continued, however, and a recent incorporation of stock-Liu into a particularly tense Civil War scene stands apart. The moment comes when Secretary Ross is confronting the Avengers with the destruction they leave behind on their missions and informing them of the Sokovia Accords that seek to govern their actions. The superhero team is understandably pretty sullen – this is the discussion that causes the initial rift between Iron Man and Captain America that would temporarily divide the Avengers in half. But thanks to this fan edit shared by @UpToTASK on Twitter, a smiling Liu is right in there with them, looking ready to suggest a group Shawarma break.

While certainly funny, the image inadvertently speaks to the challenges Shang-Chi could face when integrating with the Avengers in future films. Despite his intense training and personal history, the hero of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings seems to have an affable, happy-go-lucky attitude, which shines through most clearly in his relationship with Awkwafina’s Katy. Shang-Chi did choose to live in San Francisco as a valet named Shaun, after all. This attitude could clash with some of the MCU’s more self-serious superheroes, or, if he gets paired with Ant-Man, could result in some calamitous slacking.

While the exact nature of Shang-Chi’s future in the Marvel universe remains to be seen, he is clearly poised to take on a major role moving forward, and Liu seems positioned to make the most of it. The MCU’s most popular characters have come from the fanbase’s off-screen interactions with the actor behind the mask as much as their on-screen heroism, and Liu’s personality is ripe for a Tom Holland-style cultural takeover. If that does prove the case, these stock photos aren’t ever going away.
